Can You Get High from Hemp or CBD Oil?

Does CBD oil get you high

Over the last few decades, marijuana has steadily gained popularity. And there is no going back. Still, despite all the media buzz about the health benefits of cannabis, it is still largely associated with psychotropic effects. Due to years of suppression of this plant, most people still assume getting medical assistance from cannabis – via hemp or marijuana – means getting high. That’s not necessarily true. There is so much more to cannabis.

Hemp is NOT Marijuana

Most people don’t understand that cannabis is both non-psychotropic hemp and psychotropic marijuana. The two plants are actually cousins, but you can’t get high from hemp nor its CBD hemp oil and CBD products. In fact, in most medical marijuana strains, the majority of the beneficial effects come from CBD and not THC. (Yes, CBD can be extracted from marijuana, too, and separated from THC.) THC is responsible for the majority of recreational use due to its psychotropic effects on the body and how it makes the user typically feel sensations of euphoria. Most CBD products are made strictly from hemp-derived CBD; this is true of ALL Isodiol products.

So, you won’t get high from CBD? No, and that’s a good thing!

CBD high

No hemp or CBD high!

You see, CBD and THC actually kind of hate each other and work to block out the other’s effects when one is more present in a strain of cannabis. Hemp as a plant itself contains such a low amount of cannabinoids (and almost no THC, .03% or less) in it per plant that if you were to smoke hemp alone you would just end up with a bad migraine. In fact, as the saying goes, you could smoke a joint the size of telephone pole and not get high.

For that reason, you have to harvest large amounts of hemp to produce enough CBD extract to be used in CBD products. Medical marijuana produces more per plant, but hemp plants can grow closely together, unlike marijuana. About 200 tall, skinny hemp plants can grow in one square meter. One acre can yield 8,000 pounds of hemp seed, not to mention all of the stalks. When cold-pressed, the 8,000 pounds of hemp seed yield over 300 gallons of hemp seed oil. Again, oil is also extracted from the stalks.

However, CBD oil extracted from hemp plants is the only type that the US government allows to be sold legally nationwide.

Now consumers can enjoy all types of CBD hemp oil and other CBD products, in a variety of forms and delivery systems.

Hemp water

What’s the deal with Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil itself is an excellent source of essential fatty acids, and can be found in health food stores around the country. EFAs are not produced by the body; we must get them in our diets. They are the healthy fats that sustain us, powering both our brains and bodies. However, we don’t hear much about hemp oil, because it’s CBD that really brings an array of health benefits. So, even if you’re not buying CBD oil specifically, you can still get a wealth of nutritional benefits by using hemp oil in your diet.

Stay tuned here for more of how cannabinoids can benefit your wellbeing, and therefore, your life in general.

What is CBD Isolate?

What is CBD Isolate?

With the rapid growth of the CBD industry and constant advances in its technology, there are a lot of terms floating around that are unfamiliar, if not confusing, to many people. CBD isolate is one of them. While the science and biological make-up of CBD is the subject of much research and scholarly articles, it can all be broken down into simple terms.

CBD Basics

CBD isolate starts with the extraction of CBD hemp oil. Extracting fatty acids from the stalk and seed produces this oil, a botanical concentrate of hemp plants. CBD is one of the 85 cannabinoids in the hemp plant, which is part of the cannabis family, and cannabidiol/CBD oil is high in CBD. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that deliver an array of health benefits. And consumers can get the spectrum of CBD advantages from a range of products made with CBD isolate – from nutritional supplements to topical applications and even cosmetics. Also, CBD contains no THC, so products made from the isolate are not psychoactive and cannot get you “high”.

CBD isolateCBD and Nanotechnology

Again, don’t be fooled by the scientific terminology. Nanotechnology is the engineering of systems on a molecular level. What does this mean when applied to CBD isolate?

The CBD isolate purification process begins with a certified, proprietary, eco-friendly CO2 extraction process. Next, the fats and oils are removed from the hemp oil. Then, the unwanted plant material is removed with heptane and a rotary evaporator. The oil then goes through a secondary rotary evaporation and is decarboxalated prior to going into the final phase of the CBD isolate processing. To guarantee the purity and safety of the final product, each batch is tested and sent for third party verification.

What that means is that the end product is an extremely concentrated form of CBD. The molecules made are 100x smaller by the purification process.

CBD extractWhy CBD Isolate is Superior

First off, CBD interacts with specific targets on cells in the body. CB1 receptors are found mainly in the brain and are important for learning, coordination, sleep, pain, brain development, etc. CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune system. What this means is that the chemicals in hemp CBD communicate perfectly with your body’s own chemical language and help create the homeostasis required for good health.

CBD isolate amplifies the delivery of the CBD’s healthy benefits due to the nanotechnology process. In typical CBD products, 90% or more of the CBD is wasted because the body simply cannot absorb it. For instance, CBD particles measure about 2000 nanometers. Human cells measure 100 nanometers. A cell cannot fully utilize a particle larger than itself.

CBD isolate products go as small as 16 nanometers, meaning that there is literally no waste. The body can utilize every part of it. Bottom line: the smaller particles created by nanotechnology mean better absorption.

  • Greater bioavailability
  • Use less of a given product for an even better result
  • CBD particles cross the blood/brain barriers more efficiently

When you use CBD isolate products – on your skin or in your body – you can count on better results. Nanotechnology in CBD products means that before you even ingest it or put it on your skin, the isolate does what the body naturally does before ingestion with maximum absorption and no waste.

How Cannabidiol (CBD) Works for Treating Anxiety

https://www.leafly.com/news/health/cbd-for-treating-anxiety?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Weekend%20News%20-%20Week%2039%20-%20eng&utm_term=Master%20-%20Engaged%2C%20Active%2C%20Passive%2C%20or%20New

Jeremy Kossen is a contributing writer at Leafly. He is a best-selling author, podcaster, and entrepreneur.

While we don’t normally think of anxiety as desirable, it’s actually a critical adaptive response that can help us cope with threats to our (or a loved one’s) safety and welfare. These responses help us recognize and avert potential threats; they can also help motivate us to take action to better our situation (work harder, pay bills, improve relationships, etc.). However, when we don’t manage these natural responses effectively, they can become maladaptive and impact our work and relationships. This can lead to clinically diagnosable anxiety-related disorders. We’ve all heard the saying, “stress kills.” It’s true!

Anxiety-related disorders affect a huge segment of our population — 40 million adults (18%) in the United States age 18 and older. In response, Big Pharma has developed numerous drugs to treat anxiety-related disorders, from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac and Zoloft to tranquilizers (the most popular class being benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax).

What are the Best Cannabis Strains for Anxiety?

While these drugs can be effective for many patients, some don’t respond favorably. Certain patients don’t see much improvement, or they can’t tolerate the side effects. Moreover, tranquilizers like Valium and Xanax can be highly addictive. Clearly, alternative treatments are warranted. Couldcannabidiol (CBD), the most prominent non-psychoactive constituent in cannabis, provide a viable alternative for currently available anxiety medications? Quite possibly!

In recent years, CBD has generated a tremendous amount of interest among consumers, clinicians, and scientists. Why? Not only does evidence suggestCBD counteracts many of THC’s adverse effects, but numerous animalstudies and accumulating evidence from human experimental, clinical, and epidemiological studies suggest CBD has powerful anti-anxiety properties. Administered acutely (“as needed”), it appears safe, well-tolerated, and may be beneficial to treat a number of anxiety-related disorders, including:

  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Social phobia
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Mild to moderate depression

How Does CBD Work?

Active receptor isolated on blue

CBD exerts several actions in the brain that explain why it could be effective in treating anxiety. Before we dive in, it’s important to note that most research describing how CBD works is preclinical and based on animal studies. As the saying goes, “mice are not men” — and, results from animal studies don’t always neatly transfer to human therapies. However, preclinical studies provide insights that move us in the right direction:

5-HT1A agonist: 5-HT1A is a subtype of the serotonin receptor, which is important because anxiety and depression can sometimes be treated with medications that target the serotonin system. This is why drug companies developed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac and Zoloft. SSRIs work by blocking reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which increases availability of serotonin in the synaptic space. This helps brain cells transmit more serotonin signals, which can reduce anxiety and boost mood in certain cases (although the full biological basis for this is more complicated and not fully understood).

Similar to SSRIs, CBD may boost signaling through serotonin receptors. In an animal study, Spanish researchers found that CBD enhances 5-HT1A transmission and may affect serotonin faster than SSRIs. Researchers noted:

“The fast onset of antidepressant action of CBD and the simultaneous anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect would solve some of the main limitations of current antidepressant therapies.”

Cannabis and Depression

Hippocampal neurogenesis: The hippocampus is a major brain area, and plays a critical role in a variety of brain functions. It’s most famous for its role in memory formation and cognition. Brain scans of patients suffering from depression or anxiety often show a smaller hippocampus, and successful treatment of depression is associated with the birth of new neurons (neurogenesis) in the hippocampus..

An animal study using mice found repeated administration of CBD may help the hippocampus regenerate neurons, which could be useful for treating anxiety or depression. Research shows both SSRIs and CBD may promote neurogenesis. This is significant, because evidence suggests that severely impaired neuronal plasticity may influence suicidal behavior. Future research comparing CBD and SSRIs effect on neurogenesis could open up promising new avenues in how we understand depression and how to most effectively treat it.

How Can CBD Help Anxiety?

Medical Marijuana Plants Grown in Supportive Fencing
Building on the foundation of animal studies, human studies are starting to provide evidence to demonstrate that CBD can improve many commonly reported anxiety-disorder symptoms, including acute stress and anxiety.

Human Studies Show How CBD Reduces Anxiety

Brazilian researchers conducted a small double-blind study of patients afflicted with generalized social anxiety. After consuming CBD, participants reported a significant decrease in anxiety. Researchers validated patients’ subjective reports by performing brain scans showing cerebral blood flow patterns consistent with an anti-anxiety effect.

In another small study, researchers had patients suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder perform a simulated public speaking test. Participants reported significantly less anxiety, findings supported by objective anxiety indicators like heart rate and blood pressure.

Researchers concluded, “[CBD] significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in their speech performance,” whereas the placebo group experienced “higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, [and] discomfort.”

Final Thoughts

Evidence from animal studies have begun to characterize the details of how CBD acts in the brain, and human studies of patients with and without anxiety disorders are starting to validate CBD’s efficacy as an anti-anxiety treatment. Given the huge social and financial costs of anxiety disorders in the U.S., CBD has the potential to play a significant role in treating a myriad of anxiety-related disorders.

While more research, including large randomized-control trials (RCTs), is clearly warranted to examine the long-term effects and potential for CBD, its demonstrated efficacy and highly favorable safety profile (particularly when compared to currently available drugs) make it a viable alternative or adjunct to currently available pharmaceuticals.
